Delighted Diédhiou off the mark

Famara Diédhiou says it was a “deserved” victory for City over Derby County on Saturday, after positive Covid-19 results hampered the squad’s preparation for the Sky Bet Championship fixture.

Despite just two days training together over the international break, the squad battled to earn a 1-0 win over the Rams, with Diédhiou coming off the bench to grab the crucial second-half strike – his first goal of the campaign.

Diédhiou was one member of the camp hit by Covid-19 and had to miss the Cardiff City win and then self-isolate for 10 days .

But it didn’t stop the Senegal forward from finding the back of the net. Antoine Semenyo’s cutback picked out his strike partner, with Diédhiou trapping the ball with a right-foot touch before firing low with his left in the 78th minute.

He told Robins TV with that infectious smile: “I’m very good, very well now. I isolated for ten days with my family but I’m good now, feeling better!

Famara Diédhiou celebrates his first goal of the season

"We deserved that because the training ground had been closed and we got just two days training. But the squad deserved it because we worked hard to be ready for the game and we did our best to win, which we did.

“It’s always a big pleasure to score, it doesn’t matter if I start or come off the bench, I just have to be ready and focused to do my best. I came off the bench, scored the winning goal so I’m very happy.”

The goal also secured City a third consecutive win in the league as they jump to third in the Championship standings.

They now prepare to face visiting Watford on Wednesday night (7.45pm KO) live on Sky Sports..
