Defensive Rigidness Will Help - Smith

Korey Smith feels Bristol City’s improved defensive displays will help them climb the Sky Bet Championship table.

In the past three matches City have conceded just twice, whereas they had conceded nine in the preceding four fixtures.

It comes after interim boss John Pemberton switched to a back four, and they were unfortunate at Leeds United on Saturday as the hosts won the game with their only shot on target.

“Once again Rich (O’Donnell) hasn’t had a save to make and then we’ve conceded a sloppy goal,” Smith told Bristol City Player HD.

“They haven’t really had a shot and still won the game so we’re disappointed with that.

“We need to score more goals to help out the defence. We still had a few more chances after that and if we got one of them, and came away with a draw then it would’ve been a positive result.

“If you look at the last three games, we’ve only conceded two goals, which isn’t a bad ratio. We just need to score a few more and that will help out the defence. On another day they’ll go in.”

He continued: “We can’t keep thinking about it. We’ve got a couple of big games coming up at home to Birmingham and away to Charlton so we’ve got to build on our good defensive display, apart from the goal, and look to get a few more goals at the other end.”
