Lee Johnson has congratulated Diego De Girolamo on his debut hat-trick for Cheltenham Town.
The Italian youth international secured the matchball with a treble in the Robins’ 6-1 win over Leicester City Under-21s in the Checkatrade Trophy last night.
He told Bristol City Player HD: “I actually texted my dad (Cheltenham boss Gary Johnson) after the game and said I would be recalling him!
“On a serious note, we know Diego can score goals and he showed exactly what he’s all about last night. It’s great for him because he’s made a terrific first impression on his debut.”
Johnson also confirmed Zak Vyner has returned to Ashton Gate following the conclusion of his loan spell at Accrington Stanley, where he made 17 appearances.
“Zak has returned that bit bigger and with some good experience under his belt,” Johnson added.
“We’ll assess Zak over the rest of this month, given the Adam Matthews (injury) situation. Then we can look at it again to see what’s best for Zak, with regards to whether he’s in and around our first team or if it would be worth sending him on loan again.”
Wes Burns is still on loan at Aberdeen and Dons boss Derek McInnes is keen for him to see out the rest of the campaign at Pittodrie.
However, City’s head coach said: “There’s been quite a bit of interest in Wes, in many ways. We’ll know more in the next week or so.
“Aberdeen want to keep him and that shows how much they think he can affect things, but has hasn’t played much and it’s important we do what’s right for Wes and the club.”
Meanwhile, Arnold Garita, who has played 12 times for Plymouth Argyle in an injury-hit loan spell, is poised to stay at Home Park for the rest of the campaign.
