Cotterill On His Defensive Signings

Steve Cotterill has explained the reasons behind his double defensive capture on transfer deadline day.

Nathan Baker (Aston Villa) and Liam Moore (Leicester City) were recruited on loan to bolster City’s options at the back.

Cotterill says City’s system of playing three at the back meant they needed further cover in those positions, and he’s pleased Baker and Moore have had the recent international break to get to know their new team-mates.

He told Bristol City Player HD: "Sometimes the best way of bedding in is by having a game or two with your new team-mates.

“However, Nathan and Liam have settled in very well, as I knew they would because they’re coming into such a good group.

“Now it’s about getting game time and getting to know their team-mates even more.

“They’re both tough, strong lads who bring experience with them. We needed more defenders back there. We play with a 3-5-2 formation so we were short.

“We’ve got good players in that position anyway but we needed to strengthen.”

The loan window is now open but Cotterill doesn’t anticipate any business in the very near future.

“The squad is probably only two players short of being where it needs to be, but at the moment we’re happy with what we’ve got.

“If we’re going to recruit any more players then we have to do it in a measured way. We don’t want too many coming in because we haven’t got another pre-season.

“We can bed a player in bit by bit from time to time but we’re quite happy with what we’ve got. The squad is shaping nicely.”

The City boss revealed he had a permanent signing lined up on deadline day only for it to fall through at the last minute.

“We’d agreed a fee, agreed a deal with the player, did the medical but unfortunately we couldn’t quite get it over the line,” Cotterill said. “It may still happen, but not as a loan, it could be in January.”
