Steve Cotterill hailed his players’ efforts after seeing City set new heights in their final game of a marathon 2014/15 campaign.
It was party time for the double winners as Cotterill’s side shared four first-half goals with Walsall at a sold-out Ashton Gate.
But City confirmed their status as runaway champions with six second-half goals without reply to rack up an unprecedented 8-2 victory, including an Aden Flint hat-trick to take the defender’s tally to 15 for the campaign.
“We weren’t too sharp in the first half but we had a few words at half-time and I thought the boys were fantastic in the second half,” said the boss.
“To score eight goals in a game is no mean feat. It’s fantastic because we’ve gone right to the end – right to the 93rd minute in the last game of the season.
“They deserve all the plaudits they get. They’re a fantastic group and I love working with them.
“I’m pleased for Steve Lansdown, Keith Dawe and the rest of the Board; and everybody at the football club, because it’s had some tough times.
“From the moment we turned up to the moment the season finished, it’s been one big effort by everybody. I can’t thank everybody enough.
“It’s been a truly fantastic season and now the boys can go and enjoy their summer holidays – I suppose we all can!”
