Conway hails tight-knit group

Tommy Conway says the Under-23s closeness as a squad has played a huge part in their successful season to date.

He was called into Alex Ball's side on Tuesday with his double helping the Under-23s beat Charlton Athletic 4-3 at the Optima Stadium.

It's a result which keeps them top of the Professional Development League South, with this being a fourth consecutive win.

Robins TV: Conway on a good day's work ⚽️⚽️

"We're all together, all the lads have been here a good few years," Conway said. "In training we link up and that carries on onto the pitch."

Conway's first of the day was from the penalty spot as he kept his cool before turning in from Zak Smith's assist. His strike partner Louis Britton also scored a brace and the young Robins held out as Charlton battled back to go just a single goal behind in stoppage time.

Conway said: "The message is always to start well. We seem to score early and it happened again as we were 3-0 up after 15 minutes. After that we got a bit too comfortable, we sat off when we should have continued going at them but we'll learn from that and take it into the next game."

Conway said it felt good to be back scoring with the Under-23s

The striker was back with the development squad while impressing on loan at Bath City. He has nine goals in 13 appearances across competitions for the Romans.

He's watched from afar as his fellow Academy teammates have earned the opportunity to be in the first-team matchday squad, such as Sam Bell, Sam Pearson and Ryley Towler to name but a few.

"All of those boys are doing very well," said Conway as he hopes to follow suit. "Seeing them makes us think we have a chance and hopefully in years to come a few of us will be where they are, doing what they're doing so yes it's exciting."
