Wes Burns has expressed a fresh air of optimism on his return to Bristol City pre-season training.
The 21-year-old scored five goals in 14 games in loan spell with Fleetwood Town at the end of last season, which earned him a call-up to Wales’ pre-Euro 2016 training camp.
Burns spent two weeks with Chris Coleman’s squad leading up to the tournament in France and feels his experiences with his national team and Fleetwood have left him more self-assured in his ability.
“I think the confidence side of things is something I need to take forward,” he told Bristol City Player HD.
“Getting game time is a massive thing for me because I’m a confidence player, so to go up to Fleetwood and do as well as I did by scoring a few goals, and being on their teamsheet as starter regularly was a great experience.
“Being part of the preliminary squad heading into a major tournament is a major achievement for me. It was good to take a step back in training and watch how they move, what they do, how and when they do things. It’s always a good learning experience to be around those types of players.
“I’ve got to take the confidence from those experiences into training and show the gaffer (Lee Johnson) I’m good enough to be in his team.”
The squad ended their six-week hiatus on Wednesday much to the satisfaction of Burns.
The academy graduate has been away from his team-mates since February due to his loan and compared the atmosphere to that of he Wales squad.
“Coming back and seeing everyone here just puts a smile on everyone’s face,” he said.
“Everyone gets on so well. It’s like when you break up from school and you go back after six weeks and see everyone which is always fun!
“The Wales boys are kind of like the lads here. Everyone’s having a laugh and doing things together, whether it’s a game of pool or ping pong.
“That’s obviously helped them get where they are.”
