Club statement

Bristol City Football Club has released the following statement.

As a result of a HMRC employer review going back six years, a technical breach has been identified within our Bristol City Academy players’ wages.

We are a responsible and caring employer and as such choose to provide transport for our young Academy players to games. Due to travel-time being included as ‘hours of work’, some players’ wages dropped below the minimum wage during the occasional month when a higher than usual number of long-distance away games arose. When taken in context i.e. over the 12-month pay period, players’ wages were in excess of the minimum wage.

Despite following best practice guidelines as laid out by football’s governing bodies and paying above the advised pay scale we have still had this technical breach.

With the help and guidance of HMRC this has now been corrected.
