Charities take centre stage in Celebration of Sport Week

As Bristol becomes the European City of Sport for 2017, Bristol Sport Foundation has pitched in to support the initiative with the launch of its Celebration of Sport Week at Ashton Gate Stadium next week.

The highly anticipated week of sporting action is set to take place at the city’s state-of-the-art stadium from Monday, 22nd to Wednesday, 24th May and will see each charity deliver training sessions, festivals and education workshops from each of their award-winning programmes.

“We are delighted to open up Ashton Gate Stadium for community usage and give the people who access our programmes the chance to come together and celebrate the progress they have made,” said Bristol Sport Foundation’s chief community officer, Ben Breeze.

“It will be fantastic, with primary and secondary school children, disabled sportspeople and the older generations all having their chance to play sport on the hallowed turf or concourses of Ashton Gate Stadium.”

Monday sees the Foundation’s multi-sport programme - Forever Sport - take centre stage, along with a variety ofcommunity programmes showcased across the stadium.

On Tuesday, the focus switches to Bristol Rugby Community Foundation as boys and girls from a range of programmes take to the pitch for a series of tag and invasion games – while the older generation, from the Community Foundation’s Walking Rugby programme, exhibit their skills in the South Stand concourse.

“We are delighted to open up Ashton Gate Stadium for community usage and give the people who access our programmes the chance to come together and celebrate the progress they have made.”

Chief Community Officer, Ben Breeze

The week signs off with a fun-filled festival of football delivered by Bristol City Community Trust, with youngsters once again given the opportunity to emulate their heroes on the Ashton Gate pitch.

But it’s not just youngsters who will be showcasing their talents, as, like the Community Foundation, the Community Trust’s ever-popular Walking Football programme will also be in action at the stadium along with the Man V Fat programme.

The Disability Football programme, in partnership with Gloucestershire Football Association, completes an action-packed week of sport with Bristol Sport Foundation taking centre stage.
