Burns Returns Home After Wales Camp

Wes Burns has returned home after spending two weeks with the Wales team in the build-up to Euro 2016.

The Bristol City Academy product was named in Chris Coleman’s 29-man preliminary squad and travelled to Portugal for an intense training camp as part of the Dragons’ preparations for their first major tournament in 58 years.

The 21-year-old relished the experience of training alongside the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey on a daily basis, but admitted it did not come as a surprise to be omitted from Wales’ final 23.

“I’d spoken to Chris Coleman while I was out there and he told me that he wasn’t looking to take me to France, so I already knew before the final squad was announced,” Burns told bcfc.co.uk.

“But he said he was really pleased with how I’d done in the week’s training camp and it was a great experience for me to take forward in the future.

“It was hard work out in Portugal because they’ve been trying to get everyone fit for the first group game, but I enjoyed it.

“I feel like I coped well with the standard of players who were there, because obviously they are very good players, and it’s always good to learn from them.”

Burns finished the season on loan at Fleetwood Town, scoring five goals in 14 games, and will soon return to Ashton Gate ahead of the upcoming 2016/17 campaign.

“I’ve not really had much rest,” he added. “I had about a week between breaking up with Bristol City and meeting up with Wales.

“I’ve got a short holiday planned for the weekend and then I’m going to start running again in preparation for pre-season.”
