Brunt adds to Robins quality

Midfielder Chris Brunt has completed his move to Bristol City ahead of the 2020/21 Sky Bet Championship season.

He arrives at Ashton Gate after 13 years with West Bromwich Albion, which included a four-year spell as club captain, and 65 appearances for Northern Ireland.

Brunt joins the Robins as a free agent on a one-year deal, having left the Hawthorns at the end of his contract with the Baggies this summer.

City CEO Mark Ashton said: “I offer a very warm welcome to Chris and I am sure his vast experience and midfield qualities will be a big addition for us over the season ahead.”

Head Coach Dean Holden said: “It’s brilliant to have secured Chris’ services because he is a player who is going to be very useful to us on and off the field.

“He’s technically very good, with an accurate pass, and a leader with a strong voice who will be a great teacher to the younger players. That is important to the development of this squad and I’m really looking forward to working with Chris in the season ahead.”

Brunt’s career started at Middlesbrough in 2002 though he wouldn’t make his professional debut until a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday in March 2004. He made the move to Hillsborough permanent that summer and he helped the Owls win promotion to the Championship in the 2004/05 season.

Brunt signed for West Bromwich Albion in 2007 and he won three promotions to the Premier League during his 13 years there, once via the Championship title (2007/08) and twice via runner-up spot (2009/10, 2019/20). He was crowned Baggies’ 2008/09 Player of the Year.

He had a four-year international career and scored three goals after making his debut against Switzerland in 2004.
