Bristol City Women FC’s Megan Alexander tells Bristol Sport what its like to be a role model.
The 22-year-old joined The Vixens in January from Everton Ladies, where she spent last season impressing down the left flank.
The defender says: “I am still young and don’t always feel like a role model but when young fans come up to you after the game, it really does put in perspective what we do and how privilege we are to be playing sport for a living”.
She added: “Women’s sport is changing and making huge leaps forward but there are challenges we face especially with funding and media coverage.”
“The Women's World Cup really put women’s football on the map and I think we were able to get more women’s sport televised then it will really help.”
Megan also played for Liverpool Ladies and enjoyed a spell on loan at Oxford United Women. She encourages young women to keep playing sport even after they leave school: “sometimes young girls are unaware of what is out there and what they can achieve”.
Megan added: “I think if you have a sport you can concentrate on then it can really keep you on the right path”.
Bristol City Women take on local WSL2 rivals Yeovil Town Ladies in their opening game of the season on Wednesday, March 23rd at the Stoke Gifford Stadium.
