Bristol City Arrange 'Johnson Cup' Date

Bristol City will play Cheltenham Town on Monday, July 25th (7.45pm) in a pre-season friendly at Whaddon Road.

It means the current City head coach Lee Johnson will come up against former manager Gary Johnson – but of course it’s son versus father.

It’s something the pair have experienced twice already, when Lee was in charge of Oldham Athletic and Gary at the helm of Yeovil Town.

At present, in competitive action, it’s one victory apiece.

With his tongue firmly in cheek, the City head coach said: “The Johnson Cup is up for grabs again!

“Dad has the trophy at the moment after his Yeovil team spanked Oldham 4-0. I had to hand over the cup after beating his side 1-0 the season before.

“That makes it a very important third match.”

He added: “It’s great that Cheltenham are back in the Football League and this should be a great game for both teams ahead of the new campaign.”

Gary commented: "Lee has thrown down the gauntlet. He's probably going to spend £10m or more just to win this Johnson Cup as the rivalry is so fierce!

"However, it is a great pre-season game to have and it will be a really good test for us and hopefully for them as well."
