Bristol Academy goalkeeper, Mary Earps, has been put on standby for the England as they compete in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada this month.
Earps will be called into the squad in the event of an injury to Karen Bardsley, Siobhan Chamberlain or Carly Telford. The 22-year-old has represented England at all youth levels from under 15s to under 23s – although she has yet to obtain a senior cap.
“It’s an honour to be named as part of the long list squad. I wish the girls all the best out there.”
“It’s a strange situation to be in. Of course I would love to be there with the team, but I wouldn’t wish an injury on anyone in order for that to happen.”
England are competing against France, Mexico and Colombia of Group F for a spot in the knock-out stage. Following their 1-0 loss to France on Tuesday evening in their opening game, the next two games are vital to their qualification chances.
Earps has been ever-present in the Bristol-side since signing in March 2014, and her determined performances this season have not gone unnoticed. Academy chairman Simon Arnold said: "Mary has been in outstanding form this season and we are all delighted for her."
Recently returning from international duty from the Nordic Tournament with the England U23s, Earps added:
“I’d love to represent my country at senior level in a major tournament one day, but for now I’m focused on working as hard as I can for Bristol Academy; I’m looking forward to the second half of the season.”
England’s next group match is against Mexico on Saturday evening (June 13th).
Season Tickets for the 2022/23 campaign are selling at a record pace, with more than 9,000 supporters already committed.
