Benković grateful for City opportunity

New loanee signing Filip Benković says he is “grateful” for the chance to represent City in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign.

The defender completed his deadline day switch from Leicester City and told the club website he can’t wait for the new challenge ahead of him.

“Deadline day is always a bit stressful but I tried to stay calm because sometimes you can’t let the facts affect you,” Benković said, in his first club media interview. “But it was a long day, I can say that, but everything was sorted and I’m grateful for the opportunity the club has given me to play here.

“I found out about the interest from City a few weeks ago and I was really excited when I heard of the option. Now I’m here I can say I’m really grateful as I say for the opportunity. The club wants to do something big and it has an opportunity to do something big. I can’t wait to work hard every day and at the end of the day it makes sense. We need to push and never give up.”

He joins City on loan until May, one season after his part in Celtic’s treble-winning campaign. On loan from the Foxes, Benković helped Celtic to the Scottish Premiership, Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup as well as featured in their Europa League campaign.

“I had a really good season at Celtic and I really enjoyed it back there,” the 22-year-old said. “It was really helpful because as a young player when you get the opportunity to play at a European level it gives you more experience and confidence and I’m really grateful for that. My experience from last season I will try to improve more this season at City.”

And now his focus is on achieving new heights in BS3.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to the challenges in this second part of the season. Speaking to the gaffer and people at the club, they are looking for big things this season.

“We know it won’t be easy because the Championship is interesting. It’s why everyone loves it but I can say I’m really look forward to the challenge, I love challenges and it keeps me motivated to work hard every day. We need to push each other in training every day to be positive and to have big faith that we can a lot this season.”
