Benik Afobe has suffered a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a freak training accident.
Benik, on loan at City from Stoke City, will require surgery and rehabilitation which is expected to take the rest of this season.
City Chief Executive Mark Ashton said: “Benik has certainly made an impact since joining us and was settling in well as a popular member of the squad, both with his team-mates, staff and supporters.
“We are working closely with Stoke City to ensure the best possible care and rehab and, on behalf of everyone at Bristol City, we wish him well in his recovery.”
City Head Coach Lee Johnson said: “We are naturally disappointed for Benik as he had fitted in well both on and off the field and we were excited about what he could bring this season.
“It was one of those freak accidents that occasionally happen and his knee went with no-one near him.
“But Benik is a strong person who will come back from this and as a squad we are determined to be successful for him and ourselves.”
