Beard challenges squad to replicate performance levels

Matt Beard has urged his Bristol City Women team to play with the same level of attitude and desire when facing Leicester City Women in the FA Continental Cup final this evening (7:30pm KO).

The Robins picked up their first league win of the campaign with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday and Beard has challenged the group to pick up where they left off.

“It was a relief for everyone at the club to get the first win in the league. I wasn’t aware it was the first home win two years, so it’s great for the group to have that monkey off their back,” said Beard.

“The players have been fantastic since I have come in and we have picked up two wins in the last three games, so we’re beginning to see the players play with confidence and have a smile on their faces as well, which is massive for team cohesion.

“We need to make sure we focus on ourselves and have the same attitude we did on Saturday afternoon against Brighton. If we play the same way and show the attitude and desire we did at the weekend, then I am confident that we can do the job and book our place in the final.”

Both teams will be vying for a place in the FA Continental Cup final, which will take place at Vicarage Road on Sunday, March 14th. Beard believes a place in the final would give the City Women squad an additional confidence boost heading into the season's final stretch.

“We all want to get to the final. I think it would be huge for the group’s confidence levels and motivation in the back end of the season,” he added.

“People can see it as a distraction but I think it would give us a great lift, especially off the back of getting the first win the league last weekend.

“This tournament has allowed the group to go out on the pitch and express themselves. They have put together a great run and now we’re beginning to see that come to fruition in the league, we’re all determined to secure a spot in the final at Vicarage Road.”

The Foxes are flying high in the FA Championship, sitting top of the table having only tasted defeat on one occasion this season and Beard knows they will travel to Twerton Park with a point to prove.

“They [Leicester] are a good team. I have said to the girls throughout the build up that we cannot go into the game underestimating them.

“They have built a very capable squad and one thing that I have picked up on is that they never know when they’re beaten. They’ve scored goals late on to draw and win games, so we have to be on the ball for ninety - maybe more - minutes to achieve our goal.”

Supporters can watch Bristol City Women take on Leicester City Women live on the FA Player App from 7.30pm evening.
