Tyreeq Bakinson admitted he was “buzzing” to make his Sky Bet Championship debut and contribute to the Robins’ opening day victory over Coventry City.
The 21-year-old’s introduction into midfield after 55 minutes alongside Chris Martin had the effect Head Coach Dean Holden desired as City took control of the game and scored the winner through Tomas Kalas with less than ten minutes remaining.
And Bakinson, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, where he helped the Pilgrims to promotion from League Two, was delighted to play his part.
“Dean just said to bring some energy to the game,” Bakinson told Robins TV. “Sometimes the game just needs some fresh legs, and my job was to pass forward and get attacks started. I’m buzzing just to get on the pitch and help the team.”
Fellow tyro Antoine Semenyo joined the action after 77 minutes and Bakinson was encouraged by Holden’s faith in his young players, saying: “It’s good to see that if you work hard enough you’ll get on the pitch. The competition for places is good. It helps you keep your standards up and helps the team – whoever is training and playing the best plays.”
Bakinson now feels more equipped for the Championship thanks to his time with Argyle and commented: “I was playing in front of big crowds (pre-Covid), the pressure of getting results and we wanted to get promoted as well. Hopefully all that experience will help me here.”
Holden added: “Tyreeq was outstanding, you could see his qualities with the ball: taking the ball in tight areas and he moved us up the pitch with control. Without the ball he made his tackles and put a stop to Coventry’s attacks.”
Bakinson will be hoping to stake his claim further if given the chance on Wednesday (September 16th) when Northampton Town visit BS3 in Round Two of the Carabao Cup, which is exclusively available to watch on Robins TV with coverage starting from 7.15pm.
Bristol Bears will face Zebre and Perpignan in Pool A of the 2022/23 European Challenge Cup.
