Baker completes first City outing

Nathan Baker made his first appearance in a City shirt as the club’s Under-23s edged out Taunton Town with a 1-0 win in Somerset.

The recent signing from Aston Villa is suspended for the opening day of the season due to a red card on the final day of the last campaign.

So head coach Lee Johnson used the pre-season friendly as an opportunity to give Baker a run out, along with the likes of Scott Golbourne, Gary O’Neil and Taylor Moore.

The match was decided on 27 minutes by Diego De Girolamo’s penalty kick. The attacker secured the penalty when his trickery in the penalty area drew a foul and from 12 yards he sent Taunton’s keeper the wrong way.

De Girolamo had another chance soon after, before Freddie Hinds narrowly failed to connect with a cross from the Italian youth international.

After the interval Taunton saw a goal ruled out for offside, while Hinds and Moore went close for City.

A raft of changes then meant chances dried up as the game entered the final stages, with City completing a narrow victory.

City Under-23s: O'Leary, Moore, Plavotic (Edwards 69), Baker (H.Smith 69), Kelly, Trialist (Harper 82), Morrell, O'Neil (Dowling 46), Golbourne, De Girolamo, Hinds (Akpobire 63). Subs not used: Robertson, Mortimore.
