Ashton Gate Stadium welcomes the West of England Joint Transport Board’s decision to back plans for the MetroWest Phase 1, a rail infrastructure that Bristol can be proud of.
As the regeneration of the Ashton area has already begun with the £45m rebuild of the Ashton Gate Stadium the need for the Bristol-Portishead rail line to be re-opened is imperative.
Martin Griffiths, Chairman of Bristol Sport, who is overseeing the stadium rebuild said “It is good news that the local Councils are backing this improved rail infrastructure.
“In conjunction with the plans that we have for the stadium becoming the South West’s biggest conferencing and entertainment venue there is a huge opportunity to regenerate this area. The number of jobs created around the stadium and surrounding area over the coming years will be significant.
“There is a real need for local people to have a viable local rail network. This link would support the people of Bristol enormously not least the surrounding businesses and communities of Southville, Ashton, Ashton Vale, Bower Ashton and the environs.”
A decision is expected later this year or early next year on whether the Ashton Rail Station re-opens.
