Alan Skirton: 1939 - 2019

The club wishes to pay its respects to former winger Alan Skirton, who passed away aged 80.

Skirton represented Bristol City between 1968-1971, scoring 14 goals in 78 appearances and was recognised for his pace and power down the wing.

It was at his hometown club Bath City where Skirton's career began, before a move to Arsenal where he earned the nickname 'Highbury Express' and scored the first-ever European goal at Highbury.

He moved to Blackpool before heading south to City, where he spent three seasons notably helping City reach the semi-final of the League Cup in 1971, when he scored against Tottenham Hotspur.

Skirton moved on to Torquay United for a season, before spending time at Durban City and retired at Weymouth where he won the Southern League Cup in 1973.

He later became commercial manager at Yeovil Town, playing a prominent role in the club's rise before his retirement in 2002.

On and off the pitch Alan was a huge personality who touched so many and he will be sorely missed by his wife Jane, sons Andrew, Paul and Simon and daughter Debbie.

In their statement, Alan's family said: "He meant so much to his brothers Mick, Colin and Gordon and their families, his grandchildren and their families and his great grandchild Tobias who was recently welcomed into the Skirton family.

"We will all miss him terribly but are so relieved that he is at peace and without further pain and suffering.

"For all his wonderful achievements he will be remembered most fondly by those who knew him as A True Gentleman."
