‘A good all-round team performance’ – O’Leary

Max O’Leary returned to the starting XI against Millwall, playing a key role to earn City a clean sheet and secure their place in the Fifth Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Goals from Famara Diédhiou, Nahki Wells and Antoine Semenyo fired City past the Lions at the Den.

At the other end, O’Leary pulled off good saves to deny the likes of Mason Bennett, Ryan Leonard and Ben Thompson, but it was an improved display from the Robins who deservedly advance in the FA Cup.

Now Sheffield United await City in the next round.

O’Leary told Robins TV: “I had a bit to do but the boys played well and I thought we stuck together all the way to the end. Now it should be a good game against Sheffield United.

“We moved the ball well at times and we had to mix it up at times. We went long, got the second balls but we also tried to play. The pitch was cut up a bit so it was harder to do that, but overall it was a good all-round performance.”

The match presented O’Leary the chance to impress between the sticks, in what would be a fourth appearance of the season. Antoine Semenyo also returned to the starting XI, while Owura Edwards got game time off the bench to make his club debut.

O’Leary said: “There are so many games, the fixture list is so congested and some of the boys were looking forward to getting a game.

“We had a few changes, so it was nice to freshen it up. Some of the boys got a deserved rest, so it’s good for everyone to get some games in.”

And the shotstopper was delighted for Semenyo to get back on the scoresheet. Semenyo has now scored three goals this season, with his first two coming in the earlier rounds of the Carabao Cup last year.

“He deserves that goal - he’s worked hard and had a tough time the last few weeks so he really deserved that,” O’Leary commented.

Now the Robins prepare to return to Sky Bet Championship action when they face Huddersfield Town at Ashton Gate on Tuesday (January 26th, 7pm KO), live on Robins TV.
