Academy product Golbourne was given his debut by Brian Tinnion away at Colchester United in February 2005, on the same day Cole Skuse made his first appearance for the club.

He made 15 appearances for the club, scoring once in a League Cup tie against Barnet.

In January 2006 he joined Reading for an undisclosed fee, but found chances limited at the Madejski Stadium, relying on loan moves to Wycombe Wanderers, Bournemouth and Oldham Athletic for regular football.

Golbourne switched to Exeter City in 2009 and went on to make in excess of 100 appearances for the Devon club.

He returned to the Championship with Barnsley in 2012 and remained in the second tier when Wolves paid £700,000 for his services the following summer.

Golbourne sealed a return to Ashton Gate after a ten-year absence in January 2016 for an undisclosed fee, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract.
