FRIDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Fri 16 Jul 2010

Steve Coppell admitted Bristol City had suffered self-inflicted wounds as he experienced defeat for the first time as Robins manager. Swedish league leaders Helsingborgs proved too much for City in the second friendly of their Scandanavian tour. Coppell had expected a stern test and so it proved as the hosts - five points clear at the top of the Allsvenskan League - ran out 4-0 winners in front of an ebullient crowd. City had two goals disallowed and saw a penalty saved during the defeat in Örebäcksvallen.

Cole Skuse has rejected the suggestion he is stuck in a comfort zone after signing a new contract at Ashton Gate. The midfielder is now tied to club until the summer of 2013 - a one-year extension. The club's player of the year for 2009-10 said: "At the end of the season I finished on a massive high. I was a bit overwhelmed at the presentation. It was a great night for me and my family are very proud and so was my wife to be - now my wife.

Midfielder Cole Skuse has signed a new contract with Bristol City which will keep him at the Championship club until summer 2013. The 24-year-old was voted player of the year by City supporters last season. "The end of the last season finished on a big high for me with the award," Skuse said.

England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce has backed Bristol City to make Ashton Gate a fortress next season, ahead of his own visit to the home of the Robins in August when the Young Lions will take on Uzbekistan. With former England player Steve Coppell now in charge of City, Pearce is confident they will be a force in the Championship, and not least due to the backing of the Bristol fans, something he is hoping to have next month, too. England Under-21s head to Bristol on August 10 and Pearce will be fielding some fresh faces, who he hopes will give him some food for thought ahead of the naming of his squad for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers against Portugal and Lithuania in September. Pearce said: "We're hoping to use this game to take a look at one or two new players at this level."
