FRIDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Fri 21 May 2010

Gary Sawyer has been told he faces a long wait if he wants to join Bristol City. The former Plymouth Argyle left-back, whose Home Park contract expired this month, is hoping to land a permanent deal with City after impressing during a one-month loan spell towards the end of last season. Sawyer impressed in Championship games against Derby County and Blackpool and made no secret of his desire to remain in Bristol next season. Negotiations have already commenced between Sawyer's representatives and Ashton Gate officials, but new Robins manager Steve Coppell is in no hurry to make new signings.

Bristol City boss Steve Coppell believes his side can take a leaf out of Blackpool's book as they attempt to push for promotion next season. Ian Holloway's Tangerines were many people's favourites to be relegated from the Championship at the start of the season but can seal their passage to the Premier League by beating Cardiff in the play-off final on Saturday. Coppell praised the job Holloway has done at Bloomfield Road and insists his Robins side can learn from the way the Seasiders have gone about their business. He said: "What Ollie has achieved at Blackpool and the way he has gone about it is an example to us all. Just about everyone thought they would go down at the start of the season and those people have all been proved wrong."
