FRIDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Fri 30 Apr 2010

New Bristol City manager Steve Coppell is already looking at potential transfer targets. Appointed only last week, the 54-year-old former Reading boss does not officially take up his post until May 11 and is currently on holiday in the United States. But far from taking it easy, Coppell is already working hard to bring in new signings during the summer recess. He is in daily contact with Robins caretaker manager Keith Millen and chief scout Pete Johnson and the trio are discussing players they wish to bring in for next season. Millen revealed: "I've worked out the time difference and was on the phone to Steve only last night. We're chatting on a regular basis and talking about what happens after the final game. Pete Johnson is also involved and we're discussing various names and targets."

It's been a rollercoaster season at Ashton Gate. At the centre of it all has been club chairman Steve Lansdown. So as the season finally draws to a close, why does a successful businessman put himself through the mill week after week? "The more you get involved in football, the more fascinating it becomes, and it does become a passion, it's a bit of a drug." There's many a fan will agree with that, but the addiction has perhaps cost Stephen Lansdown more than most.

Swansea's on loan striker Lee Trundle has assured fans that parent club Bristol City will do all they can to beat Blackpool. The Swans need a favour from the Robins if they are to push their way back into the play off places but Trundle, on loan from Ashton Gate, has assured Swans fans that his parent club will be doing their best. Trundle said: "We were at the PFA awards on Sunday so I met up with some of the Bristol boys then."

Swansea City may be wondering about Bristol City's motivation at Blackpool, but at least one Robins star will be desperate to do well. Paulo Sousa's men bid to keep alive their hopes of Premier League football this weekend, but Gary Sawyer insists he is playing for a prize even greater. The defender, who played for Blackpool boss Ian Holloway, is out to secure his football future. On loan from Plymouth, the 25-year-old is set to start for the Robins at Bloomfield Road after making his debut for the club in a 2-1 win over Derby last Saturday. Sunday's result will have little bearing on Bristol City's season, while the Seasiders aim to secure the win that would guarantee them the final Championship play-off spot ahead of Swansea. The stakes are high for Sawyer, who is scrapping to secure a long-term deal at Ashton Gate. "I'm fighting for my life because I want to get a contract at a good club," he said.

Paulo Sousa has insisted Swansea City can still make it a Welsh one-two in the race to a claim a potential £90m Premier League jackpot, declaring: "We are still alive." The Swans welcome Doncaster Rovers to the Liberty Stadium on Sunday knowing only a win will be good enough, while still needing Blackpool to slip up at Bristol City.

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway claims club President Valeri Belokon deserves much of the credit for the club's success this season. The Seasiders will guarantee their place in the play-offs if they beat Bristol City on Sunday and Holloway says Belokon's role has been crucial. "Without him believing in what I said none of our success would've happened," he said.
