Keith Millen is adamant Bristol City will do everything in their power to keep hot-shot striker Nicky Maynard at Ashton Gate. City's record signing became one of only three Championship players to score 20 goals in all competitions this season when he netted twice in Saturday's 2-1 home win over Derby County. He has scored 19 in the league and one in the Carling Cup. Only Cardiff's Peter Whittingham, has scored more in the second tier - with 20 in the Championship and three in other competitions - while Scunthorpe's Gary Hooper has, like Maynard, scored 20 goals. Maynard's exploits are likely to attract interest from Premier League clubs during the summer. But caretaker boss Millen, who will hand over the reins to new manager Steve Coppell after next week's final game at Blackpool, issued a warning to potential suitors when he said: "It will take a massive offer for us to even contemplate allowing Nicky to leave. Of course there will be interest in him, because he has scored 20 goals."

Nicky Maynard never stopped believing he could crack the 20-goal barrier for the first time in his career. A naturally confident individual, City's record signing boldly declared his intention to do exactly that before the Championship campaign had even kicked off. Many thought him as good as his word when he netted 13 times in 15 outings, only for the goals to dry up during a near-barren 19-game run in which the 23-year-old managed to find the back of the net just once. Lesser characters might have succumbed to self doubt and cracked under the pressure, but not Maynard, who never wavered from his assertion that his publicly-stated target was attainable. Refusing to lose heart, he kept the faith, persisted and eventually proved that, while form is temporary, class is permanent. His 19th and 20th goals, one poached from close range, the other delivered from the penalty spot, confirmed Maynard's status as one of the hottest properties outside the Premier League and ensured the Steve Coppell era commenced in positive fashion.

Nicky Maynard says Bristol City are buzzing at the prospect of Steve Coppell joining next season. After reaching 20 goals, Maynard said: "The last couple of months have proved how good we are and hopefully Steve Coppell can bring out a bit extra. The players are as excited as the fans."

Nicky Maynard took his goal tally to 20 then vowed to anxious Robins fans: "I aim to get even more next season - for you at City." Maynard, 23, stabbed in a third-minute opener and converted a penalty he won himself 11 minutes from time. It left caretaker-boss Keith Millen voicing fears of a bid from a Premier League club. Millen explained: "It's not rocket science that top clubs will be looking at him. "But it would have to be a fantastic offer. "I'll be very surprised if he's not here next season." Maynard said: "I'm just focusing on City. I think I can get more than I did this season."

Nigel Clough was disappointed and frustrated after Derby County returned empty-handed from Ashton Gate. Clough felt the Rams played well enough to take something from their final away game of the Championship campaign against Bristol City. A double from striker Nicky Maynard put Bristol City two up before Stephen Pearson pulled a goal back with his first of the season. But Derby slipped to a 2-1 defeat - their first defeat in five away games. Clough said: "It was as good a performance as we have put in in those five away games."
Derby Telegraph
Keith Millen admits Bristol City face a battle to keep hold of Nicky Maynard after his brace against Derby. The Robins striker took his tally to 20 with both goals in the 2-1 win over the Rams and caretaker manager Millen knows that the highly-rated 23-year-old is going to attract interest in the summer. "When a player scores 20 goals for a Championship club it is sure to attract interest and we are aware of that," said Millen.

Keith Millen is adamant that Bristol City will not allow star striker Nicky Maynard to leave Ashton Gate without a fight this summer. The Robins' caretaker boss will revert to being assistant manager when Steve Coppell takes over the managerial position this summer, but he was quick to play down the chances of Maynard leaving the club for pastures new.
