MANAGER TALK

Several managers have been linked with the vacant manager's job at Ashton Gate, and in the Press Talk section, bcfc.co.uk will track all those rumours. It should be noted that publication in this section is only a reflection of what is published in the media, and not the view of the club.

Round-up: The Mail on Sunday say Steve Coppell is to become City's manager this week, saying he turned down the chance to manage Crystal Palace for a job at Ashton Gate. The Sunday Mirror agree Coppell is City's man, but claim he will take over as Director of Football, leaving Keith Millen in charge of first-team affairs. Links below.

Steve Coppell will return to management this week after an 11-month absence, taking over at Championship club Bristol City. Former Crystal Palace and Reading manager Coppell will be assisted at Ashton Gate by Keith Millen, who has been in caretaker charge since the departure of Gary Johnson last month. Coppell, 54, feels ready for a new challenge after quitting Reading in May following their play-off semi-final defeat by Burnley. He recently turned down the chance to manage Palace again because the club were in administration, but feels Bristol City have the resources and ambition to get back into the top flight after a 35-year absence.

Steve Coppell is being lined up to return to football with Bristol City. The former Reading boss is favourite to take over as the new Director of Football with the Robins. He will oversee the running of the club, with current caretaker Keith Millen put in charge of first-team affairs. Coppell has not worked since quitting Reading after losing a play-off semi-final to Burnley last May.

MATCH REPORTS

Hot-shot Gary Hooper single-handedly burst Bristol City's bubble at sun-drenched Glandford Park. Scunthorpe's highly-rated striker scored a hat-trick in 50 minutes to take his tally to 17 for the season and end City's chances of gate crashing the Championship play-offs. Reportedly a target for the Robins earlier in the season, Hooper proved too good for a City defence which failed to cope with his pace and movement. He opened the scoring after 19 minutes, added a second 10 minutes into the second half and put the outcome beyond doubt on 69 minutes before leaving the pitch to a standing ovation.

A Gary Hooper hat-trick eased Scunthorpe's relegation fears and ended City's slim play-off hopes. The Iron have now hit the 50-point mark - but boss Nigel Adkins believes they need one more win. He said: "We are near and yet so far. We still need another win. But we were tactically bang on."
News of the World

Nigel Adkins refused to rest on his laurels despite Scunthorpe demolishing play-off chasing Bristol City 3-0 at Glanford Park, insisting Coca-Cola Championship survival is still three points away. Gary Hooper's hat-trick was the catalyst for the Iron to end a derisory run of form that had seen them lose three successive games. The result gives Scunthorpe a five-point cushion over the relegation zone, pushing them closer to retaining their place in the second tier for the first time in 47 years. "Excellent result, excellent performance, great credit to the players," summed up Adkins after the game.
Sporting Life
