Nicky Maynard gave City victory over Swansea in the Anglo-Welsh Championship derby at Ashton Gate. But City left it late, forcing the winner five minutes from time to make it seven games unbeaten under caretaker manager Keith Millen. Substitute Ivan Sproule made the goal, outstripping a hitherto obdurate Swans defence to set-up Maynard for his 18th goal of the season. In the play-off positions at the start of the day, Swansea came for a point and frustrated their opponents, only to leave empty-handed.

Swansea City's play-off hopes were dealt another blow as Nicky Maynard's late strike punished a poor performance and secured victory for Severnside rivals Bristol City. In a desperately poor game that neither side deserved to win, Maynard made the most of some great work from Ivan Sproule to tap home an 84th-minute winner. Looking tired and short of ideas, the Swans could have little complaint as their top six finish begins to look increasingly precarious. With the disappointing Gorka Pintado wasting their only real chance of the game, Paulo Sousa's men were unable to test the hosts' defence. Bristol weren't much better but the difference was the ability to make the most of their one moment of magic.

Paulo Sousa admits he is in uncharted territory as he watches his Swansea side collapse. Nicky Maynard's late winner left the Portuguese midfield legend nursing a horror run of just six points from eight games that has left his club clinging precariously to the play-offs. "As a player I was always fighting for championships, so I didn't have this sort of experience, and not before now as a manager either," he said. "All we can do is to keep working. I have belief in my players and I think they should believe in themselves too."

Nicky Maynard was Bristol City's hero once more as his late strike sunk Swansea 1-0. After scoring the only goal of the game in their Easter Monday triumph at Sheffield Wednesday, Maynard tapped home from close range in the 84th minute to extend the Robins' unbeaten run under caretaker manager Keith Millen to six matches and keep their faint play-off hopes alive. By contrast, sixth-placed Swansea are now looking anxiously over their shoulders towards Blackpool, who are just two points adrift with three games remaining.

Keith Millen saw his job prospects improve as his Bristol City side dealt a blow to Swansea's play-off hopes. Nicky Maynard tapped in Ivan Sproule's cross for his 18th goal of the season as Swansea continued to lose momentum in their quest for a top-six finish. For Millen, it was his sixth match unbeaten since he took over as caretaker boss following Gary Johnson's exit. City chairman Steve Lansdown will this week make a decision on a successor - and Millen is not ruling himself out. He has steered the Robins to four wins and two draws and will be considered along with Steve Coppell, Alan Curbishley and Sean O'Driscoll. Millen said: "That win certainly makes my CV look better, what ever happens. I've loved doing the job and the lads' response has been great."
News of the World
Swansea's play-off bid suffered a setback as Bristol City continued their fine form under Keith Millen with a 1-0 victory. Nicky Maynard scored the decisive goal just six minutes from time to keep the Robins' faint hopes of finishing in the top six alive. Swansea had chances of their own, most notably a one-on-one opportunity for Gorka Pintado, but it looked like they would at least emerge with a point until Maynard's late tap-in.

Caretaker manager Keith Millen confirmed after Bristol City's victory over Swansea that he would like to remain with the club. The Robins have enjoyed an excellent run since Millen took charge and continued in the same vein with a 1-0 victory over play-off hopefuls Swansea on Saturday. Nicky Maynard's 17th Championship goal of the campaign in the 84th minute secured the three points and Millen was naturally delighted. He insists he would love a role in the next management set-up even though he knows the club might look to bring in a new face as manager or director of football. "I'm aware that the chairman has been speaking to other people, but it would be a disappointment now if I wasn't involved as either manager or coach," Millen said.

Swansea boss Paulo Sousa insisted he was still confident of making the play-offs despite the late defeat against Bristol City. Nicky Maynards 84th minute strike condemned the Swans to a defeat that saw them drop to sixth position in the Championship table. But Sousa said: "We had good opportunities before Bristol scored and it is our main problem at the moment but we aren't scoring when on top. We know that if we go in front we have the quality ball players to keep possession and frustrate the opposition. By not taking our chances, we are putting pressure on ourselves. But I still have great faith in my players and I firmly believe we can still achieve a play-off place."
