FRIDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Fri 09 Apr 2010

Nicky Maynard is setting his sights on finishing as the Coca-Cola Championship's leading scorer. And Bristol City's ace marksman remains confident he can hit 20 goals in a season for the first time in his career. Maynard has already won the Championship goal of the year award for 2009 for his Boxing Day strike against QPR and is now intent upon finishing the campaign as the top scorer in the second tier. But he must first overhaul Cardiff City sharp-shooters Peter Whittingham and Michael Chopra, who have netted 19 and 16 goals respectively in the league - 22 and 19 in total. Maynard has 16 Championship goals to his name - 17 in all competitions - and is looking to add to his tally in tomorrow's home game against play-off contenders Swansea City.

Bristol City caretaker boss Keith Millen claims he is still undecided on whether to apply for the permanent manager's job at Ashton Gate. The Robins are unbeaten in five games since the 43-year-old took the reins after Gary Johnson's departure last month. But Millen does not know whether to throw his hat into the ring for the full-time role despite having talks with chairman Steve Lansdown. "I was pleased by what the chairman had to say in out meeting," Millen said.

Bristol City have been boosted with news that the injury to keeper Dean Gerken last week at Nottingham Forest is not as bad as first feared. The club's medical staff initially thought the 24-year-old goalkeeper had broken his collarbone but club physio Nick Dawes has revealed two X-rays have shown no fracture. "Our worst fears have not come true, which is great news for Dean and the team," Dawes said.

Bristol City goalkeeper Dean Gerken has not broken his collar bone, as had been originally feared. Gerken was injured in a challenge by Nottingham Forest's Nathan Tyson during Saturday's 1-1 draw. Tests show Gerken could be fit to return to the side shortly, although City physio Nick Dawes said Gerken still had bruising and swelling.

Wolves striker Stefan Maierhofer's loan spell at Bristol City is to end, caretaker manager Keith Millen said. The Austrian came to Ashton Gate on 15 February on emergency loan following Chris Iwelumo's recall to Molineux. Millen said: "It's a bit unfortunate for Stefan. He came into us for Plymouth not as fit as we expected and it was a difficult start for him."

Bristol City youngster Christian Ribeiro believes caretaker boss Keith Millen should be named as permanent coach. Millen has steered the Robins to a five-match unbeaten run since taking over from Gary Johnson. That run looks to have come too late to put them back in contention for a play-off finish, but they remain an outside chance. Ribeiro feels Millen would be the perfect successor to Johnson who left the club three weeks ago after a string of disappointing results.

Lee Trundle has warned Swansea City that they will line up against a revitalised Bristol City at Ashton Gate this weekend. The on-loan Trundle will not be allowed to feature on Saturday because, officially at least, he remains a Bristol player. Though he is unlikely to represent the Robins again — he is out of contract this summer — Trundle remains up to speed with what is happening across the Bridge thanks to a number of former team-mates. And the Scouse star has revealed that Bristol are playing with a new freedom following the departure of long-serving boss Gary Johnson.

Paulo Sousa has brushed off the presence of under-fire referee Mike Dean at Bristol City tomorrow, warning his players to do their jobs properly even if the officials can't. Top official Dean has come under fire over the past week following a series of blunders in high-profile Premier League matches between Blackburn and Burnley and Manchester United and Chelsea. The Wirral-based referee gave a ridiculous penalty for Blackburn at Turf Moor with Martin Olsson admitting that he took advantage of Dean's tendency to award spot-kicks. Then Dean was criticised for getting two penalty decisions wrong and allowing a United goal that many believe was handball while Chelsea's decisive second goal was clearly offside. Sir Alex Ferguson bemoaned a "poor, poor performance" from Dean and assistant referee Simon Beck, who made the shocking offside gaffe. The pair have now been demoted to Championship action and will take charge of Swansea City's trip to Ashton Gate.
