Gylfi Sigurdsson scored twice as Reading eased their relegation fears further with victory over Bristol City at the Madejski Stadium. The Royals were ahead after only 12 minutes when Jobi McAnuff crossed for Sigurdsson to head in and the Icelandic midfielder doubled their lead from the penalty spot after being brought down by Paul Hartley. Bristol City pressed for an equaliser and Jamal Campbell-Ryce brought a good save from Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici but the Robins were unable to find a way back into the game.

You may have thought Gary Johnson would read his players the riot act after their poor show. Instead, the Bristol City boss challenged his men to use the result - and Reading's run of form - to mount their own play-off push. Johnson had no complaints after the Royals won their seventh Championship game in eight. They closed to within a point of the Robins and are just eight away from the top six with 12 games to go. In the space of 10 first-half minutes, Gylfi Sigurdsson's header and cool penalty put Reading in the driving seat. They could have scored six but wasted a hatful of chances. Johnson said: "Reading are on a great run and if they carry on as they are, they could do what Forest did and get right up there in the play-offs. But we can do that too. We're still in with a chance."

Reading boss Brian McDermott was delighted with his side's 2-0 win over Bristol City, while Gary Johnson had no complaints. The Royals recorded their seventh win in eight league games and maintained their unbeaten record at home in the league this year. The Royals led 2-0 at half-time thanks to two goals from Gylfi Sigurdsson but should have been even further ahead of a poor Bristol City side at that stage. "The only criticism I have of my players today is that they didn't get that third goal," said McDermott.

"We created a lot of chances, but having said that the key is to win games and get three points."
