SATURDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Sat 06 Mar 2010

Gary Johnson has asked Wolves if he can keep Chris Iwelumo for a further month. But the Post understands Bristol City's manager has been told to prepare to make do without the big target-man once his loan spell expires next Saturday. Scotland international Iwelumo has made a big impact since joining the Robins on February 13, helping to halt a slide which had threatened to plunge the club into a relegation battle. Iwelumo will again spearhead Bristol City FC's attack in today's home game against Doncaster Rovers and will be available for trips to Crystal Palace and Reading on Tuesday and Saturday respectively. Johnson is keen to retain the services of the 6ft 3in target man and has already contacted Wolves boss Mick McCarthy.

Bristol City have called time on Adriano Basso's Ashton Gate career. The out-of-favour goalkeeper is now a free agent after Bristol City FC terminated his contract last night. Transfer-listed since before the start of the season, the 34-year-old Brazilian, whose contract was due to expire in June, is now free to find another club. City's decision ends a long-running saga which has affected management, players and supporters for the last six months. Robins boss Gary Johnson declined to comment on the decision to release the South American, but club chairman Steve Lansdown paid tribute to Basso, who joined City in 2005 and helped them win promotion to the Championship in 2007 and reach the play-off final 12 months later.

Goalkeeper Adriano Basso has left Bristol City after having his contract terminated by the club. The 34-year-old handed in a transfer request back in the summer but City received no offers for the Brazilian. "Adriano has been a great servant to the club over the last few years and was a key part in our promotion in 2007," said chairman Stephen Lansdown.

Cole Skuse insists Bristol City must beat Doncaster Rovers at Ashton Gate today before they can talk of "turning a corner." A restorative three-match unbeaten run has served to steady the ship and ease immediate fears of a relegation battle. But City remain midway between the play-off and relegation zones and midfielder Skuse says it is too early to talk in terms of a recovery. He said: "We've had two draws and a win in our last three games and that's a big improvement on what went before," said the Bristolian, who suffered along with his team-mates during an alarming sequence of eight games without victory which saw the Robins slide down the Championship table. I don't think we can say we've turned a corner until we've beaten Doncaster."
