FRIDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Fri 05 Mar 2010

Gary Johnson is planning to add to his Bristol City squad ahead of this month's deadline for loan signings. City have been swamped by injuries to senior players in recent weeks and manager Johnson says is looking to bolster a defence which has been hit especially hard. Jamie McCombe is out for the remainder of the season, Brian Wilson is yet to make his comeback from a fractured shin and Jamie McAllister is still nursing a calf strain which has already caused him to miss three games. Johnson is able to call upon youngsters James Wilson and Christian Ribeiro if needs be, but both are young and lacking in Championship experience. He will instead seek recourse in the loan market and target either a left-back or centre-back capable of doing a job for the team during the final two months of the season. Although Bradley Orr, Louis Carey, Lewin Nyatanga and Liam Fontaine have forged a solid defensive unit in recent weeks, an injury to any of those four would leave City short of experienced cover. Johnson confirmed: "I feel we need to strengthen in that particular department and I'm looking to see what is available. We still have a few weeks to bring in someone on loan and we could do with another left-back or centre-half. It's a difficult situation, because you need experience in the Championship and you cannot bring that in and then sit it on the bench."

Bristol City have been hit by the news midfielder Evander Sno faces another two weeks out with an ongoing back problem. The 22-year-old, who is on loan from Ajax, suffered the back injury during the warm-up ahead of the clash at Watford on February 9. And, while the medical staff at Ashton Gate diagnosed a back spasm, Sno will need a longer recovery period and will miss the Doncaster game on Saturday. "We know what the problem is and we know how to treat it," manager Gary Johnson said.

Bristol City boss Gary Johnson has revealed his desire to extend the loan deal of Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Chris Iwelumo. The Wolves striker has made four appearances during his current stay with the Robins and netted during the recent 2-1 win over West Brom. Iwelumo will be available to face Doncaster, Crystal Palace and Reading before his stint at Ashton Gate expires. Johnson said: "We'd like to keep Chris for another month. I speak to Mick McCarthy (Wolves boss) after every couple of games to let him know how Chris is doing."
