FRIDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Fri 19 Feb 2010

Bristol City striker David Clarkson insists he and his team-mates will not dwell on the last-gasp goal which cost them victory against Leicester in midweek. Without a win in their last six Coca-Cola Championship outings, City were denied a much-needed three-point haul when Lloyd Dyer conjured an injury-time equaliser less than a minute after Clarkson had fired the Robins in front at Ashton Gate. Although the result leaves City 16th in the table and nearer to the relegation zone than the play-offs, Scotland international Clarkson believes the plusses far outweigh the minuses. "We're professional footballers and there's no way we're going to throw our toys out of the pram and sulk after letting in that late goal," declared the summer signing from Motherwell. "Of course, the lads were all disappointed, because we were so close to winning the game, only to have it taken away from us at the death. But we cannot allow ourselves to get into a situation where we are down and feeling sorry for ourselves. These things happen in football and we all recognise that and realise we have to get on with it and move on. We have to pick ourselves up, look to the next game and take the positives from what was a very good second-half display."

Gary Johnson will take a different approach in the transfer market after Alvaro Saborio became the latest foreign import to leave Bristol City following an unsuccessful spell at the club. Saborio's loan spell with the Robins was cut short by mutual consent on Wednesday, and the 27-year-old has returned to his native Costa Rica. Tamas Vasko and Peter Styvar have also come and gone after failing to make an impact at Ashton Gate and Johnson insists the club have learned from their mistakes. "You cannot make a blanket statement that all foreigners struggle, that's not true. They are all decent players and internationals and, at their levels in their countries, they are good players," he said.

Midfielder Cole Skuse could shake off an arm injury in time to face West Brom at Ashton Gate on Sunday. The 23-year-old had to be substituted after an hour of the Leicester defeat but X-rays have confirmed he has escaped a fracture and should be ready for the clash with the Baggies. Robins boss Gary Johnson said: "We couldn't afford another long-term injury."

Ade Akinbiyi won Champagne, but all Lloyd Dyer received was a yellow card. Dyer stripped off his shirt to celebrate his late, late equaliser for Leicester City at Bristol City on Tuesday night. He earned the gratitude of his team-mates and the Blue Army after City had fallen behind to David Clarkson's strike in the first minute of added time. But referee Simon Hooper gave Dyer a booking for his shirt-removal. Dyer's impromptu strip brought back memories of Ade Akinbiyi's wild celebrations of his goal against Sunderland at Filbert Street on November 3, 2001.
