THURSDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Thu 11 Feb 2010

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson has assured Jamie McCombe he still has a future with the Championship club. Sidelined by injury since the end of November, the big central defender will play no further part in City's season after being told to rest his troublesome knee. But Johnson has been quick to counter any suggestion that the Yorkshireman might be on his way out of Ashton Gate in the summer. He said: "Jamie signed a new deal a few months ago and is under contract until the end of next season. We don't always say when players have extended their contracts, but I think we need to in this instance. He had had a really good spell and we wanted to keep him and the other lads happy."

Bristol City's proposals for the construction of a new stadium have been rubber-stamped by the local council. The Robins are hoping to vacate Ashton Gate, their home since 1904, and move to a purpose-built venue at Ashton Lane. Their plans were approved in principle in November, but were given the green light at a meeting of Bristol City Council on Wednesday after the club responded to a number of questions regarding the stadium's viability.

Bristol City chairman Steve Lansdown believes the club's proposed new stadium will allow the club to become more "sustainable". The Robins had plans for a new purpose-built arena in the Ashton Vale region of the city 'approved in principal' in November and they were given the green light at a meeting of Bristol City Council on Wednesday night after the club responded to a number of questions over the stadium's viability. Lansdown was delighted with the outcome of the meeting and stressed the importance of the move going ahead. "It's very pleasing. We didn't take anything for granted but the team did well and the result was the right one," he said.

John Akinde wants to follow in the footsteps of James Wilson and be a hit at Brentford. The Bristol City frontman admits he had a word with former Bee Wilson before coming to TW8. And he hopes he can be a success at Griffin Park just like his Ashton Gate team-mate, who helped the Bees to the League Two title last term. He said: "I spoke to James and he said it was a very good club."
