TUESDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Tue 26 Jan 2010

Patrick Agyemang is looking forward to forging one of the Championship's most potent striking partnerships with Bristol City marksman Nicky Maynard. Signed on loan from Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season, the Ghanaian international forward will go straight into City's team to face Cardiff in tonight's Severnside derby at Ashton Gate (7.45pm). And he is confident he and 11-goal top scorer Maynard can fire the club's play-off ambitions. Agyemang trained with his new team-mates for the first time yesterday and immediately hit it off with Maynard, who is expected to partner him in attack against the Bluebirds. "Nicky is the kind of striker I like to play alongside," said Agyemang. "He is quick, has good movement and scores good goals from just about anywhere."

Bristol City have signed striker Patrick Agyemang on loan for the rest of the season from Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers. Agyemang has struggled to establish himself in QPR's starting line-up this term, with the bulk of his appearances coming from the bench.

Bristol City have completed the signing of goalkeeper Steve Collis on a short-term contract until the end of the season. And the arrival of the former Yeovil Town No 1 will now pave the way for Stephen Henderson to join League One Wycombe Wanderers on loan. Collis goes straight into the squad and will be on the substitutes' bench to provide cover for first-choice Dean Gerken when City take on arch rivals Cardiff in a Coca-Cola Championship match at Ashton Gate tonight. His inclusion effectively means the end of the line for former fans' favourite Adriano Basso, who has been on the transfer list since refusing to sign a new contract last summer. City have yet to receive a single offer for the Brazilian keeper and, unless a club comes in for him before the transfer window slams shut next Monday, he is likely to see out his Ashton Gate contract while watching games from the stands.

Former Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Steve Collis has finalised his move to Bristol City on a contract until the end of the season. Collis left Crewe at the start of the transfer window and has now clinched a reunion with Robins boss Gary Johnson, who he played under at Yeovil Town.

Jamal Campbell-Ryce makes his Bristol City debut against the Bluebirds tonight and has issued a warning from across the Severn Bridge, saying: "We'll give Cardiff City a good beating." The Jamaican international, aged 26, has joined the Robins from Barnsley and says Cardiff's FA Cup replay won't have any bearing at Ashton Gate this evening. "The cup is one thing and Championship football is another," said Campbell-Ryce. "The Championship is something altogether different and, hopefully, we'll go out there and give Cardiff a good beating."

Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard is being urged to follow the example of Cardiff hitman Michael Chopra if he wants to reach the top. The advice has come from his manager Gary Johnson ahead of Tuesday night's Championship clash between the two clubs. Chopra was the difference the last time the sides went head-to-head in the recent FA Cup double-header, scoring in the 1-1 draw at Ashton Gate before setting up the winner in the replay in South Wales last week. The City manager said: "People like Chopra think about the game and are clever and that's why they've earned a good living down the years."

Bristol City will have new-boys Patrick Agyemang and Jamal Campbell-Ryce available for their Anglo-Welsh derby clash against Cardiff. QPR striker Agyemang has joined City on loan until the end of the season, while winger Campbell-Ryce has signed on a two-and-a-half-year deal from Championship rivals Barnsley and both should go straight into Gary Johnson's squad.

Christian Ribeiro completed a whirlwind loan move to Colchester United - and then had to perform an embarrassing initiation song in front of his new team-mates. The attacking right-back has joined the U's on a month's loan from Bristol City and made a competent debut in their 0-0 draw at Gillingham. The 20-year-old was thrown in at the deep end at Priestfield. Ribeiro met his new Colchester team-mates little more than 24 hours after playing against the Gills. And one of his first duties was to sing a song, replicating the traditional ritual performed by new Chelsea signings. Ribeiro said: "I had to sing "We are the Champions" - nice and easy!"

Colchester United new boy Christian Ribeiro certainly proved he could swim after being thrown in at the deep end at Gillingham. As of the middle of last week the 20-year-old Bristol City right-back wasn't even aware he was available for loan. Three days later he was putting in a man-of-the-match debut performance for the U's having only met his new team mates the previous night. "This all came about very quickly," admitted the Welshman, whose father's parents are Portuguese. I didn't even know I was available for loan, but I got a phone call on Thursday telling me about this opportunity, I had a quick think about it and then said on Friday that yes I would like to."

British Forces back from the Afghan frontline will be on parade at Bristol City's home game against Cardiff City on Tuesday night. The club has invited members of EGYPT, Viking Group, 2nd Royal Tank Regiment - many of whom are City fans - to attend the match following the end of their six-month deployment to Helmand Province. Representatives of the regiment will be leading the teams out prior to kick-off and then at half-time, the Ashton Gate crowd will have the chance to salute the homecoming heroes. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bristol City, particularly David Lloyd [the club's Fans Liaison Officer] and all the fans for all their support during the tour," said Squadron Sergeant Major Pat Burgess who frequently contributed to the Bristol City website during EGYPT's tour of Afghanistan.
