WEDNESDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Wed 20 Jan 2010

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson has spoken of his relief at signing flying winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce from Coca-Cola Championship rivals Barnsley. Johnson completed his first capture of the January transfer window and admitted: "I'm just pleased he will be playing for us instead of against us in the future." The winger agreed personal terms in Bristol yesterday and was today expected to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract, subject to passing a medical examination at Ashton Gate. Campbell-Ryce produced some his very best performances in a Barnsley shirt in games against City, a factor which persuaded Johnson to offer an undisclosed six-figure fee for the 26-year-old Jamaica international. Johnson confirmed: "Whenever Jamal has played against my teams, he's always been the opposition's best player. He's an exciting player and he's the type of player we need here. He's value for money and I'm just pleased he won't be playing against my team anymore."

Bristol City boss Gary Johnson admitted his side were knocked out of the FA Cup by "Premier League quality". Beaten 1-0 in a blood-and-thunder third-round replay at Cardiff City's new stadium last night, City had reason to be disappointed at the nature of their exit after being sunk by an unfortunate own goal from Bradley Orr 15 minutes from time. But manager Johnson had no complaints, insisted the better side had won and singled out Bluebirds striker Michael Chopra as the difference between the Championship rivals. The former Sunderland marksman conjured the incisive moment when he raced on to Peter Whittingham's defence-splitting pass and sent a shot cannoning against a post. Seeking to follow up and clear the danger, the unlucky Orr succeeded only in deflecting the ball into his own net to gift Cardiff a home fourth-round tie against Leicester on Saturday.

Bradley Orr scored a dramatic second-half own goal to send Cardiff City into the fourth round of the FA Cup. Defender Orr unwittingly turned the ball into his own net as Michael Chopra's shot bounced off the inside of a post and struck him. The reward for City is a home tie against Leicester City on Saturday, not to mention £67,000 prize money for reaching the fourth round.

Dave Jones hailed Cardiff City's "fantastic effort" in seeing off Bristol City in their FA Cup third-round replay last night. The Bluebirds booked a date with Leicester at home on Saturday in the fourth round thanks to a second-half own goal by Robins defender Bradley Orr. But, with illness having swept the Cardiff camp in recent weeks, depleting Jones' options, the manager was in the mood to dish out some well-earned praise after watching his side come through a scrappy Severnside encounter. "We had to start with two 17-year-olds who have played three games in six days and so it was a fantastic effort and a fantastic result," he said.

Cardiff boss Dave Jones hailed Michael Chopra, who inspired the Welsh side's push for the fourth round despite fighting a bug which made him sick on the pitch. The striker, whose goal at Ashton Gate last week came within a minute of winning the tie at the first attempt, defied doctor's orders to earn a home tie against Leicester with a 1-0 replay victory. With 16 minutes left he sprung City's offside trap to reach a Peter Whittingham pass. His shot hit a post, only to go in off defender Bradley Orr's knee for an own goal. Jones said: "Michael was throwing up. He and several other lads with the same virus were terrific. We've tried to make light of this virus, but it's a serious problem."

Bristol City have signed winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce from Championship rivals Barnsley on a two-and-a-half year deal. "Everyone wants to play at the highest level," he said. "And Bristol City were one game away from the Premier League. They and their manager Gary Johnson have shown amazing interest and put the bid on the table. I'm really excited and raring to go."
BBC Sport

Charlton manager Phil Parkinson dismissed speculation that midfielders Jose Semedo and Therry Racon may leave The Valley during the January window. Portugese enforcer Semedo had been linked with a £1 million pound move to Bristol City by the tabloids. He said: "As far as Semedo to Bristol City goes, I don't honestly know where that has come from."
