MONDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Mon 04 Jan 2010

Gary Johnson was keen to accentuate the positives after his Bristol City side were paired with Leicester in the fourth round of the FA Cup. City still have to overcome Severnside rivals Cardiff in a rearranged third-round tie at Ashton Gate a week tomorrow before they can think about taking on the Foxes. But manager Johnson believes a home draw against Coca-Cola Championship opposition represents a perfect incentive for his players to beat the Bluebirds. "It's a home draw and we cannot ask for a lot more than that," said the Londoner. "Of course, it's all hypothetical at the moment, because we still have a massive job on our hands getting past Cardiff."

Bristol City boss Gary Johnson insists the postponement of Saturday's FA Cup clash against Cardiff highlights the need for a new stadium. Match referee Peter Walton called the third-round clash off following a morning pitch inspection, deeming parts of the Ashton Gate pitch frozen. The game will now be played on Tuesday, January 12. Manager Johnson claims there would have been no need to cancel the fixture had City been in their proposed new stadium at nearby Ashton Gate. Although Bristol City Council has given tentative backing to the £92 million scheme, City still face a fight to sell Ashton Gate and move to a new ground by 2012. Johnson said: "This game being off shows why we need a new stadium."

Bristol City star Lee Johnson made his debut for Derby County in Saturday's FA Cup third round tie at Millwall. The 28-year-old midfielder, who joined the Rams on loan last Friday, helped his new team-mates come from behind to draw 1-1 at the New Den and earn a replay at Pride Park on January 13. Johnson replaced the injured Lee Hendrie at the start of the second half and Derby manager Nigel Clough afterwards declared himself satisfied with his new signing. He said: "I was very pleased with Lee Johnson when he came on. He did what I brought him to do - he got on the ball and he made a lot of passes. Hopefully, his first 45 minutes will have helped him settle and he will be encouraged by it."

Leeds are ready to snap up Hungarian international centre-half Tamas Vasko from Ujpest Dosza to solve a defensive crisis. The experienced defender, who played for Bristol City a couple of years ago, was on his way to Yorkshire yesterday to sort out a lengthy loan deal.
