Bristol City's habit of conceding late goals came back to haunt them once again after Simon Church grabbed a last minute leveller. The young Welshman was sent off - shown a second yellow card - for going into the crowd to celebrate having earlier been booked for dissent before he came on as a substitute. Church finished well after a cross from fellow replacement Jimmy Kebe. Paul Hartley's penalty had looked set to give City a scarcely deserved win over Reading - and what would have been a first home success in two months.

Simon Church nicked an injury-time leveller to upset Bristol City and then apologised for being a silly boy. Substitute Church was sent off for picking up a second yellow card after celebrating his injury-time equaliser with the Royals fans. But the striker was left cursing himself for an earlier booking, when he swore at a linesman during his warm-up on the side of the pitch. Church lost his head when referee Mark Haywood gave the home side what looked a soft penalty in the 13th minute. Jay Tabb appeared to push City's top-scorer Paul Maynard over in the box and Paul Hartley smashed home the spot-kick. Church, 21, defended himself for the goal celebration - but not for losing his rag at the official. He said: "It wasn't a penalty but I now regret doing what I did."
News of the World
Substitute Simon Church was the hero of Reading's last-gasp draw-even though his cleverly snatched goal brought him a red card for his celebrations. The promising Church had already picked up a first booking even before he had come on the field. His exchange with a linesman after the award of a penalty against his side in the 13th minute had got him into trouble. He said later: "Maybe referees don't understand quite what it's like to score a goal. Frankly I can't understand why players get punished for celebrating."

Reading caretaker boss Brian McDermott's first game in charge gave him a taste of what a roller-coaster ride football management can be. McDermott saw sub Simon Church's injury-time goal salvaged a deserved point for the Royals, then saw the striker sent off. Church collected his first booking while warming-up in the first half as he made his feelings known about the award of the penalty that gave Bristol City the lead.

Reading caretaker manager Brian McDermott felt Simon Church had been unlucky to be shown a second yellow card after his late equaliser against Bristol City. Substitute Church had been booked for dissent while warming up in the first half and collected his second for racing to the Royals fans after flicking home Jimmy Kebe's last-gasp cross to secure a 1-1 draw. "I think the momentum of the other players took Simon into the crowd and he was unlucky to get a second caution," said McDermott.
