THURSDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Thu 10 Dec 2009

Keith Millen believes Bristol City can take their Coca-Cola Championship show on the road with renewed confidence after beating Leicester 3-1 at the Walkers Stadium this week. The Robins face another potentially hazardous assignment when they head to Yorkshire to take on Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday. But assistant manager Millen insists the players will head north believing they can stage the kind of unbeaten run which propelled them into the play-off frame earlier in the season. And he claims victory at Leicester will serve to alleviate some of the pressure which built up during a five-match sequence without a win. "There seemed to be a lot of pressure coming from outside the club and we couldn't really understand why it was happening," said Millen.

Bristol City midfielder Ivan Sproule says his solo strike against Leicester was for the club after they helped him through a difficult few weeks. Sproule and his wife lost their baby, who was still born, a month ago and he has only just returned to the side. "It was nice to give something back to the club because they've stood right beside me and my wife," the 28-year-old said.

Bristol City's chief executive Colin Sexstone has condemned North Somerset councillors after they dealt a potentially serious blow to plans for the football club's new £92-million stadium. Although the decision to deny planning permission for a vital part of the scheme could yet be overturned at a further meeting or on appeal, by the time this happens the Football Association will have made up its mind whether to include Bristol as a host city for England's 2018 World Cup bid. The new stadium is central to Bristol's hopes. Mr Sexstone stormed out of North Somerset Council's central area planning meeting yesterday as councillors criticised the club's application for access to the site at Ashton Vale. After he left, they unanimously rejected the proposal to provide pedestrian and vehicle access to the stadium via land off the B3128, which comes under the committee's jurisdiction even though the rest of the stadium site is in Bristol.

The chairman of Bristol City FC has said he is "seething" at a council's decision to reject planning permission for an access road to its new stadium. Colin Sexstone said he was furious at North Somerset Council's decision to go against its own officers' report. He told the club's website he believed the meeting was "clearly biased" and decisions had been agreed beforehand. A North Somerset Council spokesman said the matter would now go to committee for a final decision in January.

Bristol City's FA Cup clash against Bristol City is to make history and be the first round tie to be broadcast live only on the internet. Bristol City are set to earn £72,000 after agreeing to move the kick-off for their FA Cup tie against Cardiff City on January 2 to 12.30pm so that it can be streamed live on the FA's website. The Severnside cup derby on Saturday, January 2, is to be streamed free of charge on the FATV section of thefa.com website.

Lee Trundle insists he can be more than just an impact player for Swansea as he eyes a permanent return to the Liberty Stadium. Trundle, whose loan spell from Bristol City expires next month, gave boss Paulo Sousa another nudge when he rose off the bench on Tuesday night to fire Swansea to a 1-0 win over Plymouth.

Paulo Sousa has hailed goal hero Lee Trundle as Swansea City's "special" one as the on-loan striker hopes to make his move from Bristol City permanent. Trundle's winner against Plymouth on Tuesday was the Swans top-scorer's third goal in his last two games. Trundle admits he is "fighting for his Swansea future" and Swans boss Sousa must decide if he is to stay full-time.
