TUESDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Tue 08 Dec 2009

Keith Millen is warning Bristol City's players they must work harder if they want to return to winning ways. Without a win in any of their last five Championship outings, the Robins will be out to put the record straight against Leicester City at the Walkers Stadium this evening. But assistant manager Millen says the players must do more if they want to get their season back on track. City boss Gary Johnson was critical of his team's work-rate following Saturday's 0-0 draw against Ipswich Town at Ashton Gate and Millen admitted: "Too many players were waiting for something to happen. When teams make life difficult for us, we have to try to work even harder and move even more. It's no good waiting and hoping something will drop kindly for you. In the Championship, you have to make things happen if you want to win games."

Bristol City defender Lewin Nyatanga believes they have the ability to get a result at fourth-placed Leicester despite not winning in five games. City could only manage a draw against lowly Ipswich on Saturday to leave them in 11th spot in the Championship. "It'll be a tough game but I think we have a chance if we play our best," Nyatanga said. "We're positive going into the game and I think we've got the players to stop them scoring."

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson could be facing somewhat of a defensive crisis ahead of the trip to Leicester. Captain Louis Carey faces a late fitness check on his groin injury while fellow defender Jamie McAllister is still struggling with a shin injury that has blighted him in recent weeks and will also be assessed late on. Bradley Orr, who has been out injured for over a month, was an unused substitute at the weekend and his return could serve as a timely boost to Johnson.

Robbie Neilson has picked out his former Hearts team-mate Paul Hartley as the man Leicester City must stop when they face Bristol City at the Walkers Stadium tonight. The City right-back said former Scotland international midfielder Hartley is the man that makes Gary Johnson's Robins tick, and warned City must make sure he doesn't do too much damage. "Paul is a good player," said Neilson, who spent 13 years with the Edinburgh club and was Hartley's team-mate for four seasons. He has good delivery from free kicks and he likes to spray the ball about. He is a good player and someone we need to watch. He has been one of their top players this season. He has a lot of experience."

No player can be assured of their place in the Leicester City side tonight after the shocking performance at Nottingham Forest, according to defender Wayne Brown. The 32-year-old centre-back said no-one who played in the 5-1 derby drubbing at the City Ground could complain if manager Nigel Pearson left them out for the visit of Bristol City. However, he said the players would put the defeat behind them and show their true character against Gary Johnson's side, with the more experienced members of the squad helping the youngsters to bounce back. "We are human and we all make mistakes, but we have to have a little bit more than we showed at Forest," said Brown. "I am not going to labour over it. I am looking forward to Bristol now and it is all about having big characters in the dressing room, it is about us as individuals and experienced pros getting around the young lads and concentrating on the positives. It is a rare dark day and people have to understand that. It is one performance in 19 games."

Lee Trundle last night insisted he can be more than just an impact player for Swansea City, as he reiterated his desire to stay at the club he loves. The 33-year-old's loan spell with the Swans is up at the end of the month and he admits he is desperate not to be sent back to Bristol City by manager Paulo Sousa. Swansea, who tackle Plymouth Argyle at the Liberty Stadium tonight, have the option of keeping the striker who left Swansea for Ashton Gate for £1m back in August 2007. And Trundle did his chances no harm at all on Saturday, coming off the bench to score two goals at Peterborough, before an injury-time equaliser robbed the Swans of all three points at the Championship's bottom club. With the Swans facing another struggling side tonight in the shape of the Pilgrims Trundle, who is now the club's top-scorer this season with four goals, admitted he was itching to earn a starting place. He said: "To be honest, you don't want to be an impact player, you want to be playing as many games as possible. And you want to be starting games."
