MONDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Mon 07 Dec 2009

Danny Haynes must have dreamed of scoring a match-winning goal against the club which decided to sell him in the summer. That dream twice threatened to become reality as the young striker set about proving a point to Ipswich manager Roy Keane. On both occasions though, the width of an Ashton Gate goal-post prevented Haynes from assuming the role of City hero. The Londoner looked certain to score early in the second half when Dutchman Evander Sno controlled a cross on his chest and played the ball invitingly into his path. But just as Haynes was preparing to wheel away in celebration, his shot swerved and came back off the foot of the post. Opportunity again came knocking several minutes later, the same two players combining to prise open Ipswich's over-stretched defence. On this occasion, Sno's through-ball presented his team-mate with a clear sight of goal, only for rookie Town keeper Arran Lee-Barrett to respond swiftly in narrowing the angle. Haynes won the race for the ball, but once again endured the agony of seeing his shot strike the goal-frame and come back out.

Gary Johnson hailed Dean Gerken as Bristol City's saviour after watching his goalkeeper almost single-handedly keep Ipswich Town at bay. Roy Keane's improving team had the better of Saturday's goalless Coca-Cola Championship encounter at Ashton Gate and would surely have taken all three points had it not been for Gerken's heroics. But the former Colchester United stopper stood strong to prevent a second successive home defeat and earn City a point which keeps them within touching distance of the play-off positions. And relieved manager Johnson admitted: "Our goalkeeper had to make more saves than theirs and Dean has kept us in it. We were too open defensively and thank goodness our keeper was in excellent form. He had a lot to do in difficult conditions and spilled one ball off a wet surface early in the game. But he didn't let it affect his confidence and he looked a very comfortable goalkeeper after that."

Roy Keane will demand his own ruthless streak from Ipswich in tomorrow night's Championship basement battle against Peterborough United. The Tractor Boys have two home games this week in which to build on their recent improvement. But Keane knows that more powder puff finishing could spell disaster. While keeper Dean Gerken performed heroics for City, Ipswich had some real villains in front of goal, none bigger than Pablo Counago. The substitute was left with little more than a tap-in when Grant Leadbitter's 86th minute shot came back off a post, but delayed his shot and allowed the grounded keeper to save with an outstretched boot

Midfielder Owen Garvan cannot explain Ipswich's relegation predicament. He said: "How can I. I wasn't around for three months." Garvan was transfer-listed and banished to the wilderness by boss Roy Keane after the team's mediocre start. But since his recall the Tractor Boys have picked up five points from three games. Republic of Ireland Under-21 star Garvan admitted: "It was a frustrating time.

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson admits his players need the shot in the arm of a win to reignite their play-off push. City are currently down in 11th, but they are only two points behind Middlesbrough in the final play-off place. "Some of our players are a little short on confidence and we need a win to lift things at the moment," said Johnson.

A four-point haul from two trips west, to Cardiff and Bristol City, would have pleased most managers. But not Roy Keane. The Irishman was frustrated that his side could not emulate their victory at the Cardiff City Stadium with a third win of the campaign at Ashton Gate. And Pablo Counago's glaring miss, with just four minutes remaining, was especially galling for Town's unsatisfied manager. "Pablo's was a great chance, and I'd expect to score from them," insisted Keane.

Former Colchester United keeper Dean Gerken was the difference between Ipswich Town drawing and winning Saturday's Ashton Gate showdown. The impressive Gerken, who left the U's to sign for Bristol City last summer, produced a string of good saves to keep Town at bay. And the performance of his goalkeeper was not lost on Bristol boss Gary Johnson. "Dean was in excellent form," confirmed Johnson.

Nigel Pearson offered no excuses for his side's 5-1 hammering at Nottingham Forest on Saturday and vowed they would put it right against Bristol City tomorrow night. The Leicester City manager was so concerned with what he saw at the City Ground he called in the players for extra training yesterday to get the performance out of their system.

On-loan Swansea City striker Lee Trundle is still waiting to learn whether he will be offered a permanent deal by the club.

Striker Lee Trundle hopes his brace in the 2-2 draw at Peterborough will persuade Swansea to make his loan deal from Bristol City a permanent move. "I'm hoping for a long-term deal in January, I haven't hidden that's what I'm after," said the 33-year-old.
