TUESDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Tue 24 Nov 2009

Gary Johnson has revealed plans to sign a left-sided player in January. Bristol City's manager has drawn up a shortlist of possible targets and chairman Steve Lansdown has made money available to spend when English football reopens for business in the new year. Johnson has yet to replace Scottish winger Michael McIndoe, who left Ashton Gate to join Coca-Cola Championship rivals Coventry before the start of the season. But he promised Bristol City supporters at the club's annual meeting last night that strenuous efforts were being made to sign a replacement during the January transfer window. "It's something we're aware of and we're trying to alleviate the problem," said Johnson.

The new Bristol City stadium at Ashton Vale will cost the club about £92 million in total, chairman Steve Lansdown has told a meeting of supporters. Addressing more than 100 shareholders and fans last night, Mr Lansdown said when fees for solicitors, architects, structural engineers and the cost of acquiring the land was taken into account, the cost of the project will increase by about a third over the previously-published figure of £65 million. The public meeting at the Dolman Stand exhibition hall at the club's existing Ashton Gate ground was a chance for Mr Lansdown to update fans on the club's annual accounts and aspirations for the future. He also took questions from the audience alongside chief executive Colin Sexstone and manager Gary Johnson. Mr Lansdown said the £65 million figure referred to the cost of constructing the building but not all the extras needed to make way for it.

Gary Johnson is looking for some of his Bristol City players to apologise for their poor display in Saturday's 4-1 defeat at West Brom. The Robins boss was unhappy with the majority of his side after they found themselves two-down in the opening 12 minutes before crashing to a four-goal mauling at the Hawthorns. Johnson has handed every player a copy of the game and he wants them to go back to him and admit where they went wrong. He said: "They need to see what they have done to affect the game, either in a negative or positive way. I'll ask them to look at what they have or haven't done and assess themselves."

Gary Johnson has defended his decision to sell winger Michael McIndoe to Championship rivals Coventry City. The Bristol City sold the midfielder for £300,000 in the summer to the Sky Blues and has been searching for a replacement ever since. But he insists he has no regrets about letting McIndoe go, according to This is Bristol. He told the club's annual meeting last night: "I can't go into details about Michael because it would not be professional to do so."

Wycombe manager Gary Waddock has lingering doubts over a trio of forwards ahead of the League One visit of Brentford on Tuesday night. On-loan Bristol City striker John Akinde (ankle) and Matt Harrold (knock) both missed the surprise 2-0 win at Millwall at the weekend through injury and remain doubtful.
