TUESDAY'S PRESS TALK
Gary Johnson has warned Bristol City's Championship stars not to fall victim to a Carling Cup upset. City will be favourites to progress to the second round when they host League One newcomers Peterborough United at Ashton Gate tonight (7.45pm). But the early rounds of the Carling Cup are traditionally littered with big-name casualties and City manager Johnson expects this season's competition to produce its share of giant-killing acts. He warned: "Peterborough will be coming here as underdogs and we have to be very careful. The better we do, the more we are considered one of the big boys by clubs from the lower leagues. This is a big draw for Peterborough, but we know the favourites can come unstuck. We know that some big teams will come unstuck in the first round and we have to make sure it doesn't happen to us. Peterborough had a very good promotion last season and will be on the up. They are a footballing side, have a couple of good strikers and some other decent players."

Chris Weale has good reason to look kindly on the Carling Cup. The competition may not be a top priority for the Premier League's bigger clubs, but it gave Weale a rare opportunity to establish himself in Bristol City's first team at the start of last season. When first-choice Adriano Basso was injured in the opening Championship game against QPR at Ashton Gate a year ago, Weale was recalled from a loan spell at Hereford for a League Cup date with Brentford at Griffin Park. He kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 success and subsequently held on to his place for games against Blackpool, Scunthorpe United and Manchester City. Although he hardly put a foot wrong, Weale was forced to make way for Basso at Sheffield Wednesday on September 1, after which he barely featured in City's march to the play-offs. A year on, it would appear little has changed.

Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard says he is convinced the goals will come after missing a couple of chances in Saturday's 1-0 win at Blackpool. Maynard made his debut at Bloomfield Road after signing from Crewe. The 21-year-old said: "I proved that I can get into positions to make chances. On another day they'll go in, it was just one of those days. The main thing is that we got three points because it's a team game, so overall I'm pleased."

Goalkeeper Chris Weale will keep his place in Bristol City's side for the Carling Cup first-round clash against Peterborough at Ashton Gate. Weale replaced Adriano Basso at half-time in the Championship game at Blackpool on Saturday after the Brazilian suffered a thigh problem. Basso was a slight concern ahead of the first game of the season due to an injury to his other leg and, although he has now recovered, manager Gary Johnson will stick with Weale. "Adriano didn't want to let anyone down and knew he was struggling a bit diving one way so we took him off," Johnson said.
