Bristol City are making a fresh attempt to sign highly-rated Crewe Alexandra forward Nicky Maynard. The 20-year-old goal ace is the man Robins boss Gary Johnson wants to lead his attack after failing to land Egypt international Emad Meteb and Coventry striker Michael Mifsud. City showed interest in Maynard last month, only to withdraw from the race to sign him when Crewe slapped a £2.5m price tag on his head. But the Championship club is back in for Crewe's prolific marksman and it is understood City have already tabled a bid.

Crewe Alex are locked in talks with Bristol City following a bid by the Robins to lure away star striker Nicky Maynard. Although the Alex stress a deal has not yet been finalised for the sale of last season's top scorer, it is believed the Coca-Cola Championship side will be allowed to discuss personal terms with the 21-year-old once a package over the £2m mark is thrashed out. City, who lost to Hull in last season's play-off final, have turned again to Maynard to boost their promotion hopes next season after £1.5m deals for Coventry's Michael Mifsud and Egyptian striker Emad Moteab fell through. Gary Johnson's side inquired about Maynard two months ago, but it was Ipswich boss Jim Magilton who firmed up his interest when he quoted a £1.75m fee. "We know who we want to bring in. We're very close and the chairman is backing me all the way at the moment," said Johnson.

Crewe have scotched reports they have accepted a £2m bid for Nicky Maynard from an unnamed club. While reports have linked the 21-year-old with Bristol City and, most recently, Ipswich, Alex first-team coach Steve Holland remains hopeful Maynard will remain a Crewe player beyond next month's transfer window. An Alex spokesman said: "This is just speculation at the moment."
