Lee Matthews netted for City Reserves in cup victory |
Lee Matthews scored and completed a full 90-minute work out in City Reserves' 3-2 Somerset Premier Cup win over Yeovil Town tonight.
The striker - continuing his return to full fitness - netted City's second goal of the night at Huish Park as Shaun Taylor's side edged past a strong Yeovil outfit to move into round two of this season's Somerset Premier Cup competition.
Simon Clist gave the visitors a dream start by firing home a 25-yard screamer with just two minutes of the cup encounter gone.
Matthews outpaced the home defence on 27 minutes before rifling a shot past Yeovil keeper Chris Weale to make it 2-0.
Former Bristol Rovers forward Kevin Gall grabbed a goal back for the home side on 35 minutes, flicking the ball home from a couple of yards after Terry Skiverton had headed towards goal from a corner.
Ryan Harley restored City's two-goal advantage on the hour-mark, driving the ball past Weale from 20 yards.
But Yeovil then turned the screw on their opponents, making it 3-2 two minutes later as new signing Jake Edwards cut past Matthew Aubrey and fired home off the inside of Mike Stowell's left-hand post.
And although the Glovers pressed hard for an equaliser late on to send the tie into extra-time, Taylor's side held on to progress though to round two.
The development coach told bcfc.co.uk: "We worked hard, especially in the last half-hour when they really went at us in search of an equaliser.
"Mike (Stowell) pulled off some good saves near the end and we hung on for the win that we just about deserved."
On Matthews' goal and return to fitness, Taylor added: "Lee did alright and scored a good goal, but he did look a slight bit rusty at times.
"He just needs 90 minutes under his belt, like a lot of the players who participated tonight, and he's on his way back to full fitness."
City Reserves: Stowell; Simpson, Aubrey (C.Hart 65), Fortune, Harley; Lambu, Hulbert, Clist, Hawkins (McGuire 79); Matthews, M.Brown (Lita 65).
Subs not used: Stabler, Anyinsah.
