City Under-18s were beaten by two goals to one in their FA Premier Academy League season opener against Newcastle United.
John Clayton's were undone at the start and end of the first half at the Failand training ground in blustery conditions.
Newcastle led after just seven minutes when a cross was side-footed in at the near post.
City clawed their way back into the game on 25 minutes when Bobby Medjedoub whipped an inch-perfect ball into the box for Scott Wilson to convert.
However, the North East club led once more a minute before half-time as a free kick was flicked on and stabbed beyond City keeper Lewis Carey.
Aaron Holloway, on his return from injury, twice came close with storming second-half runs, and Luke Palmer's free kick was scrambled away near the final whistle.
However, Newcastle also had chances themselves and rattled Carey's crossbar before the game was out.
Academy boss John Clayton told bcfc.co.uk: "It was a good performance from the lads but it's just disappointing to lose the first game of the season."
City Under-18s: Carey; Muggeridge, Holloway (Palmer 70), Douglas, Ball; Lindsay, Medjedoub, Bryon (Wells 55); T.Andrews (Gordon 75), Wilson, Reid.
