THIS CLUB CAN SUSTAIN GROWTH - STEVE

Posted on: Fri 20 Aug 2010

Steve Wigley says he has joined "a big football club that could sustain growth".

The newly-appointed assistant to Keith Millen joined the club yesterday, taking charge of a training session for the first time.

And in his first interview, broadcast exclusively on Player, Steve explained his reasons for joining City.

He told Player: "I spoke to Keith last week when he was given the manager's job and met him at the weekend. It was was an easy decision to be honest.

"Keith's been here a long time, throughout a very successful period for the club. I've known him through various coaching courses we've done together.

"He's a very organised person; I think it's a good appointment for the club and he'll grow into the role."

He continued: "The club's been in the news a lot in recent times with Steve Coppell coming and going, and signing David James - who I've worked with before.

"I've seen the team play two or three times over the past 12 months. Working with the Under-21s you tend to see quite a bit of Championship football. I've also watched a DVD of the last few games.

"Bristol's a big city with a big football club that could sustain growth.

"I hope I bring a bit of knowledge and help Keith as well. I've been in his shoes, albeit it for a short time.

"I like being on the training ground coaching the players and getting people organised. Hopefully I can bring a tempo to everything they do."

Steve already holds an assistant manager's role with England's Under-21s under Stuart Pearce, a position he will continue to undertake whilst on City's books.

"Keith's a very organised person; I think it's a good appointment for the club and he'll grow into the role."

He joked: "I was here with England Under-21s for the Uzbekistan game just a week ago and I didn't think I would be back so soon.

"I've done it for the last three years and it doesn't interfere with club football. It gives me first-hand knowledge of the best young players this country has to offer, which is a great link for Bristol City to have."

One other bonus associated to his new role will see Steve keep in close contact with his son.

He explained: "It's strange how things work out and it's an aside really: my son starts at Bristol's UWE soon.

"When I bumped into Nicky Hunt the other day I asked if I could get a few tickets off him from time to time. I don't think I'll need to bother now!"
