Keith Millen says Graham Taylor was the man who first guided him down the path of management 16 years ago.
The City manager, speaking in an exclusive interview with the club's matchday programme, reveals the former Watford boss - now chairman - pushed him into coaching at the age of 27.
Now aged 43, Keith has stepped up to the top job at Ashton Gate on a three-year deal.
The new manager says in the programme: "I first knew I wanted to move into coaching and management at the age of 27. I was captain at Watford and Graham Taylor said to me one day: 'I want to get you involved in the coaching side of things with the Academy.'
"He saw it as something I would be good at and was the first to push me in that direction. I'd done a couple of badges before that but when you're younger, as a player, you just think you'll carry on playing forever without thinking seriously about anything further than that."
The exclusive interview covers six pages of Saturday's programme for the visit of Barnsley to Ashton Gate.
Keith also speaks openly and honestly about:-
- His time with the club's Academy and Under-17 team
- His relationship with Brian Tinnion both during and after his time as manager at City
- Success under Gary Johnson and the moment he "could see things weren't right"
- Steve Coppell's short tenure in charge
- His own ambitions in the top job
- His playing days, including the highs and lows
- The feeling of becoming "an adopted Bristolian"
- And his way of relaxing away from football
