Bristol City Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former centre-forward Brian Clark who died last night. He was 67.
Brian - the son of former great Don Clark - scored 83 goals in 195 league games after signing professional in March 1960.
A tall, stylish inside-forward, he made his league debut in April 1961, and spent most of his Bristol City career playing alongside club legend John Atyeo, until joining Huddersfield Town in October 1966.
The Bristol-born marksman netted a crucial goal (pictured below) in City's 2-0 win over Oldham in April 1965 which saw the club win promotion to the Second Division under Fred Ford, finishing the season as leading scorer with 24 goals..
He went on to play for Cardiff City - forming a lethal partnership with John Toshack and scoring the winning goal against Real Madrid in a European Cup-Winners Cup quarter-final in 1971. He later had spells with AFC Bournemouth, Millwall and Newport County, before coaching Welsh Premier League sides Maesteg, AFC Cardiff and Bridgend Town.
Tributes have been flooding in to the club, including this from vice-president Neil Trimble, formerly the club's assistant secretary:-
"I used to run a side for Bristol Crusaders in the 1960s and was looking for someone to coach the side on Monday nights. Brian heard about this, and thought nothing of taking the 5pm train from Cardiff especially to train the lads before returning to Wales at 11pm that night. He was still playing professionally then.
"That was the man he was. if could give his time to people, he would. He was an absolute gentleman, and so unassuming despite his great success as a player."
The club would like to express its sincere condolences to Brian's family and friends.
